Samuel Acidri, a distinguished student from the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers. Let's dive into Samuel’s extraordinary journey in his own words.

Discover Samuel Acidri: The Resilient Engineer Transforming Uganda's Future

Melissa: Samuel, thank you for joining us today. To kick things off, could you share with our readers a bit about where you grew up and how your upbringing has shaped who you are today?

Samuel: Thank you, Melissa. I was born in Arua District, Uganda, but spent my early years in the estate camps of Kakira Sugar Works. My father, who started as a sugarcane cutter, faced numerous hardships. Watching him rise to become a respected community leader taught me the value of hard work and the transformative power of education. His journey inspired me to believe that through continuous learning, we can overcome poverty.

Melissa: Wow, that’s truly moving. And very impactful, indeed. We'd love to know, what personal experiences have had a significant impact on your educational journey?

Samuel: Despite our financial struggles, my father was determined to educate all seven of us. The loss of my mother to breast cancer was a profound setback, but it reinforced my commitment to excel academically. Her early encouragement was foundational, driving me to overcome societal stigmas tied to our Lugbara heritage and pursue a better life through education.

Melissa: It's incredibly brave how you’ve faced such personal challenges. Could you share some obstacles you've overcome in pursuing your education and how you've managed to do so?

Samuel: Financial instability was a constant challenge. To support my education, I worked various part-time jobs, from selling pancakes to acting as a research assistant. Overcoming societal stigma required proving my capabilities, which I managed with the help of mentors who believed in me. These experiences taught me resilience and the importance of a strong support network.

Melissa: It's not easy to juggle several jobs and study at the same time. You were highly overqualified to sell pancakes, yet you did it all. Your persistence is truly admirable and must have taken a lot of courage. What inspired you to pursue further education, and what are your dreams for the future?

Samuel: Witnessing my father's public humiliation at work was a turning point for me. It ignited a desire for a better future. I dream of breaking the cycle of poverty and establishing a school in Terego District to provide education for others. Professionally, I aim to become a leader in the construction industry, advocating for Lean Project Management and mentoring young engineers.

Melissa: That’s a powerful vision, indeed. How do you see the IBQMI® scholarship impacting your life and career aspirations?

Samuel: This scholarship is a transformative opportunity that will enhance my expertise in Lean Project Management. It will connect me with industry leaders and provide resources to help implement more efficient processes in construction projects. This support is crucial as I work toward my goal of driving innovation in Uganda’s construction sector.

Melissa: You're making remarkable strides, Samuel. Can you tell us about a personal achievement that you're most proud of?

Samuel: Leading the Project Execution Plan and Total Quality Management System for the Excel-Terrain Consortium on the TOTAL E&P’s Tilenga EPSCC Oil Project was a significant achievement. It showcased my leadership and technical skills, reinforcing my commitment to excellence in the construction industry.

Melissa: That’s an impressive accomplishment, Samuel. Finally, what message would you like to share with others who are facing similar challenges?

Samuel: I’d say, remember that your background doesn't define your future. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and don’t be afraid to dream big. Hard work, perseverance, and education can open doors. Build a supportive network and strive to uplift those around you. Together, we can break barriers and pave the way for future generations.
